Ten pin bowling is a fantastic sport that can be enjoyed by the whole family. It’s easy to play and any standard of player can take part. Once you’ve got past the embarrassment of swapping your snazzy trainers for the standard-issue bowling shoes, it’s time to get started!
Here are 5 useful tips to help you become a ten pin bowling champion...
Pick the right ball – The ball you choose can make a huge difference to the success you ultimately have. Many young boys (and men) will choose bowling balls that are far too heavy for them, in an attempt to look stronger and more macho than they are! This is a big mistake. If the ball’s too heavy you won’t be able to generate enough momentum or speed to knock the pins over, and you’ll probably end up straining something after a game or two.
Get your grip right – The grip is very important to the speed and accuracy that you’re able to generate. You need to adopt a grip that feels comfortable, so the holes need to be big enough to let your fingers in, but so big that the balls falls out of your hands as you release it!
Follow-Through – Just like many other sports, such as golf, baseball and cricket, the follow-through is absolutely crucial. This will provide you with the power and accuracy you need to make a strike, so whatever you do, don’t slow down or stop just as your arm reaches your hip. Keep going instead, as this will generate the power.
Don’t fall - With the silly shoes and slippery polished floor, it’s easy to end up flat on your back looking like a Grade A chump. To make sure you don’t embarrass yourself in front of your group, stay upright as you move towards the release line, keep your bowling arm close to your body and make sure your follow-through is directed towards the pins. Start slowly and build up your rhythm, so you can build your speed up as you gain more confidence and stability.
Don’t Foul - When you’re moving up towards the release point, there’s a black line that you’re not allowed to cross. If you do, the pins you knock down won’t count. So make sure you release the ball before the line, and allow yourself a yard to stop so that your feet don’t go skidding over the line!
