Stress is everywhere these days. People are working harder, and longer, and the pressures that come with this often lead to the debilitating condition known as stress. Sure, it may be easier to dismiss stress, but it can lead to a whole host of serious illnesses, bring about life-threatening diseases and curtail lives. The fact is, without stress causing havoc to our minds and bodies, we’d all be a lot healthier, and certainly a lot happier.
So what can you do to relive stress?
Talk to someone – As they say, a problem shared is a problem halved. So whether you talk to your parents, a friend or a work colleague, getting your problems off your chest can make you feel a whole lot better about things. And by doing this, you’ll often find that other people’s problems are a lot bigger than you own, which will put things into perspective and make you feel happier about your own situation.
Exercise – Undertaking regular exercise can be a wonderful way to relieve stress. It releases all sorts of happy hormones such as endorphins which will make you happier and more relaxed. It also enables you to escape from what’s troubling you and concentrate on running that extra mile, doing that extra sit-up or lifting that extra weight. When you finish your exercise, you’ll feel refreshed, re-energised and (relatively) stress free!
LOL – Ok, we see it on our phone screens and in emails, but laughing out loud can be a fantastic way to keep stress at a distance. You’ve no doubt heard the saying; "laughter is the best medicine?" Well, it really is! Just like exercise, laughter releases endorphins, which help to reduce the build up of free radicals which can lead to illness and disease. So whenever you’re feeling stressed, head out to the movies and watch a comedy, or stick your favourite TV programme on the box, and just have a laugh!
Organise – Having too much on your plate at any given time can be a leading cause of stress. And this can be made doubly worse when you’re not organised. A build up of jobs that all need doing at the same time can be overwhelming. To guard against this, try writing out a list of jobs every day that you want to get done. Tick them off as you go. It will give you a positive feeling of accomplishment and give you back some control.
Follow these tips and you’ll stand a much better chance of relieving stress, improving your health and, most likely, living longer!
